The Chessie Circle Trail is a nearly 12 mile long corridor of CSX rail right of way preserved for future public use as a ‘rail to trail’. Stakeholders include the Metroparks Toledo, The University of Toledo, City of Toledo, Wood County Park District, Wood County Port Authority and Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments. DGL was contracted for the design of almost 2 miles of 16 foot wide asphalt multi-use path within the Metroparks’ portion of the trail. DGL’s work included multiple roadway crossings and a bridge overpass. The existing railroad wall type abutments were reused for the new single span prestressed concrete box beam superstructure. DGL was subsequently contracted by the Wood County Port Authority for an abandoned historic CSX Railroad bridge. A small park was also designed adjacent to that bridge site displaying the salvaged bridge parts and documenting the historic nature of the bridge.
