Summit Motorsports Park, previously known as the Norwalk Dragway and Norwalk Raceway Park located South Of Norwalk, Ohio is a premier ¼ mile dragtrack hosting national events.

During a track event, a jet engine powered semi caused the starting area to melt and debond. Prior to the event several issues persisted with the existing track. There was little to no crown or cross slope, ongoing maintenance of concrete to asphalt transition was required, and an inconsistent profile grade was present. While the track was perfectly safe prior to the event, there was room for improvement. After consideration it was decided to rebuild the track rather than repair it.

Summit Motorsports Park wanted a track designed that would keep drivers safe, be durable, and be one of the best driving surfaces in the country. DGL was an excellent candidate for the project given the firm’s extensive highway design experince.

The new track consists of two 18ft dragstrip lanes, two 8-foot shoulders, and an 8-foot median. 8 inches of special mix concrete pavement forms a foundation for the top asphalt driving surface. Longitudinal joints in the center of each lane run the length of the track and a concrete to asphalt transverse joint was used to enhance durability of the transition.

The track was built to special NHRA standards which include a minimum 4,500 PSI 28-day strength, no curing compound (opting for a double coat of wax cure), traction compound application after 21 days, and a paramount interest in the flatness of the track.

Despite inclement weather that spring, construction was completed in time for the beginning of the park’s racing season. In the upcoming season, drivers would have the opportunity to race on a state-of-the-art track, that’s truly one of the best driving surfaces in the entire country.
