DGL’s Traffic Engineer, Alex Weiss, EI, was out collecting Speed Study Data for a recent project! Our traffic engineers utilize various methods to collect data for traffic studies. Here, Alex is collecting speed data utilizing a radar gun. DGL has conducted numerous speed studies over the years. The speed of each passing vehicle is recorded by radar for an hour in each direction, typically during peak hour traffic. Speed data is needed for a variety of traffic analyses including speed zone studies. Care must be taken to conduct the study appropriately so that the sample data will adequately reflect speed characteristics of the population in a specific area.

After gathering speed and traffic data, DGL uses ODOT methodology to recommend solutions for the posted speed of the area studied. These solutions can include, no recommendations which keeps the posted speed the same, reducing or increasing the posted speed or other safety measures to reduce the speed of traffic through a specific area.

Some of DGL’s recent speed study projects include the following:

  • Fulton County Road 2 – MP 1.0 to MP 2.0 and MP 2.5 to MP 3.0, Swancreek Township, Fulton County, Ohio

  • Fulton County Road D – CR B to CR C and MP 2.5 to CR D, Swancreek Township, Fulton County, Ohio
