Building Safely: DGL's Commitment to Construction Safety
/Safety is not just a box to check at DGL Consulting Engineers, it is embedded in everything we do – from the project approach to the final walkthrough on site. In recognition of National Work Zone Awareness Week, we are proud to spotlight our unwavering commitment to construction safety and the essential role it plays in delivering high-quality civil solutions that meet the needs of our clients. With over 99 years of experience, we have built a reputation for it.
National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is an annual campaign held each spring to encourage safe driving through highway work zones. The theme for 2025, "Respect the Zone So We Can All Go Home," underscores the serious consequences that can result from speeding or distracted driving near active construction areas. This week serves as a valuable reminder for everyone as construction season begins ramping up across the United States.
Designing with Safety in Mind
With an integrated construction management team in house, we do not just design projects for our clients – we ensure projects are safely built to the highest standards of quality. Engineers at DGL develop plans that emphasize safe access, logical phasing, and real-world constructability. All the while, construction administration and inspection professionals are in the field every day, ensuring that safety is upheld from groundbreaking through ribbon cutting.
Work zones present inherent risks to motorists, pedestrians, and workers. That is why DGL actively incorporates safety measures into every stage of a project. From Traffic Control Plans (TCP) and Maintenance of Traffic Plans (MOT) to the discussion of carefully considered items during preconstruction safety meetings. Taking a proactive approach helps reduce hazards.
Boots on the Ground
Beyond the engineering that takes place in the comfort of our climate controlled offices, DGL field staff play the most critical role in maintaining a safe and orderly construction environment. Whether they’re overseeing a multi-phase highway reconstruction, a streetscape project in an up-and-coming urban center or a bridge replacement in a rural community – our team is trained to maintain safe conditions. That means monitoring site conditions, verifying adherence to safety protocols and coordinating with stakeholders to overcome any obstacles that might appear.
Safety Is Everyone’s Job
In construction, safety is a shared responsibility and we take our role seriously. Our approach to risk management, field presence and creating designs with the work zone in mind reflect the culture at DGL – we value the construction professionals – they are the ones who deliver projects! Without them we would have plans, but no action.
Supporting National Work Zone Awareness Week
At DGL, we support this initiative by reinforcing the importance of communication, preparation, and vigilance in and around work zones. Promoting the NWZAW messaging and fostering a safety-first culture that empowers our team members to speak up and stay alert.
This National Work Zone Awareness Week, we are encouraging everyone to slow down and stay focused in work zones! Respect the work happening behind the cones. Want to learn how DGL could help keep your work zone safe? Contact us to learn more.
