DGL was enlisted early in the design of the Wendy Park Wall project by Turner Concrete Products to provide conceptual retaining wall section design. The retaining walls were constructed along the pedestrian path leading up to the bridge over Whiskey Island Drive and the railroad tracks, providing access to Whiskey Island Park and the Connector Trail. The site is located at Salt Road and near the Willow Bridge in Cleveland, Ohio. DGL was later re-engaged by Turner Concrete to collaborate with the construction contractor in providing the retaining wall design and shop drawings using the Redi-Rock modular block system. The project included three retaining walls located along the path: a gravity wall approximately 72 feet long with a maximum exposed height of 4 feet; a partial gravity wall transitioning to a positive connection wall to support the path, approximately 260 feet long with a maximum exposed height of 19 feet; and a gravity wall with a variable setback to support the pedestrian path, approximately 84 feet long with a maximum exposed height of 19 feet. DGL’s scope of services included performing conceptual and final retaining wall design calculations based on the Redi-Rock Retaining Wall system to correspond to the plan layout as shown in the drawings, as well as the typical manufacturer details.

In conjunction with the Wendy Park Walls, the Whiskey Island Boardwalk was constructed under direct contracts with the construction contractor. The construction drawings specified a wood boardwalk, and DGL was responsible for providing the structural design of the boardwalk, including the railings and foundations, for the contractor.

As the Whiskey Island Connector Trail project progressed, the elevated boardwalk at the western end of the project was awarded to the local supplier of the Terra Tread precast concrete boardwalk system. DGL coordinated with the contractor for the design of the foundations, support beams, tread, and railings. The foundation designs had to be placed strategically due to the large number of active and abandoned utilities which were located within the limits of the boardwalk.
