Beginning in Fall 2022, DGL was contracted by the University of Toledo (UT) to complete a topographic survey and prepare a feasibility study for the construction of a signature pedestrian bridge for their main campus. Being a signature piece of campus, the bridge needed to focus on matching the materials of the university’s surrounding architecture, which is a gothic stone that is noticeable throughout the campus.
As part of the feasibility study, DGL’s bridge team completed a Structure Type Study to determine the best structure for the area and one that would improve safety and connectivity for students and visitors to main campus. After initial concepts were approved, DGL prepared detailed design plans, worked with prefabricated steel truss manufacturers and lighting consultants, managed subconsultants for geotechnical testing and landscape architecture, and coordinated with utility providers for this 78-foot span over Douglas Road. The new bridge connects the UT main campus to the engineering college on the east side of campus.
DGL’s design team collaborated closely with the UT operations staff to develop a signature structure that meets the safety needs of students, staff, and visitors while complementing the campus’s iconic Collegiate Gothic aesthetic.
In addition to completing the design for the new structure, DGL’s construction management team provided bidding and limited construction administration services. The main span of the new structure was set in place May 2025.
