DGL managed the complete superstructure replacement for the City of Sylvania’s historic covered bridge. The project began with an in-depth inspection and analysis of the existing structure, which allowed DGL’s team to present a range of repair alternatives and rehabilitation recommendations to the City.
Once the preferred alternative—a full superstructure and timber cover replacement—was selected, DGL completed the detailed design and engineering for the project. This phase also included critical approach roadway improvements, including installation of new ADA-compliant ramps at all four corners of the bridge. DGL subsequently provided full construction administration and inspection services through successful project completion.
The bridge served as the only access point to much of the Sleepy Hollow Subdivision. Due to the existing 25-foot bridge width and the need to maintain access for residents, all construction activities, including installation of the timber bridge cover, were completed using part-width construction techniques. One lane of traffic remained open at all times throughout construction, and only minimal closures were required during installation of the timber cover.
DGL maintained close oversight of construction quality by performing routine inspections, which minimized punch list items at project closeout. In addition, DGL’s thorough design process minimized change orders, and the project was completed within budget.
