DGL was contracted by The University of Toledo (UToledo) to prepare construction documents for three campus improvement projects. The construction documents were prepared on an aggressive schedule to allow construction to occur during the summer.
The first project included roadway milling, resurfacing, and curb repairs on both the Main Campus and the Health Science Campus. These plans were prepared using existing campus mapping rather than field survey data. Detailed specifications and identified work items were incorporated into the bid documents. The engineer’s estimate for the project was $765,500, and the contract was awarded to Geddis Paving & Excavating, Inc. with a bid of $687,401. DGL assisted with advertising and contract award and also provided construction administration services. The project schedule and quality exceeded UToledo’s expectations.
The second project included parking lot repairs and landscape improvements at facilities on both the Main Campus and the Health Science Campus. DGL again prepared construction documents on an accelerated schedule to accommodate construction during the summer break. The work included milling the existing asphalt wearing surface and replacing it with a new Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) flexible pavement. During construction, areas of poor subgrade were encountered and required removal and replacement with geogrid and stone. The contract was awarded to Jennite Company for $458,400, which was below the engineer’s estimate of $517,000. The project was completed in accordance with the established design and construction schedule.
The third project involved repairs to a loading dock facility and construction of a new parking lot located on the Health Science Campus. The project included scarifying and replacing the existing concrete drive wearing surface, removing and replacing a failed retaining wall and walkway, and designing and constructing a new 40-car parking lot. Extensive office research supported the preparation of construction documents that minimized potential unknowns and reduced the likelihood of costly change orders. The engineer’s estimate for this project was $261,000, and the contract was awarded to The Spieker Company for $238,000. DGL also assisted with advertising, contract award, and construction administration services for the project.
