Since 2022, DGL partnered with the City of Sylvania on the rehabilitation of Main Street through downtown. The project began with a preliminary study that included field survey, traffic data collection, and public involvement before advancing into design and construction. Building on the Downtown Sylvania Master Plan, the project included full reconstruction of 1,400 feet of Main Street from Monroe Street to Erie Street, along with improvements to Maplewood Avenue between Main Street and Summit Street. The work integrated roadway reconstruction with utility upgrades (storm sewer, water, sanitary sewer, and electric) and streetscape enhancements to create a cohesive and functional downtown environment.
A key component of the project was improving ADA accessibility throughout the corridor, where challenging grade differences existed between the roadway and adjacent businesses. The design eliminated existing steps and widened sidewalks to provide continuous accessible routes. In Phase 1, accessible storefronts increased from 4 of 34 to 28 of 34. Key features included on-street parallel parking, which increased from 22 to 53 spaces, reduced lane widths for traffic calming, raised mid-block crossings, enhanced lighting, and coordinated streetscape elements. The use of an uncurbed roadway section created a flexible environment that prioritized pedestrians and improved accessibility at storefront entrances.
DGL advanced the project through final design and construction using a phased approach to maintain access and minimize disruption to downtown businesses. Phase 1 construction was completed in 2025 and included full roadway and utility reconstruction, along with pedestrian and streetscape improvements. Phase 2 design was completed in early 2026 and included similar enhancements to the north block, with the addition of burying existing overhead utilities. Construction of Phase 2 was scheduled for Summer 2026. Throughout design and construction, DGL’s Roadway and Traffic/Safety teams collaborated closely with the City and stakeholders to deliver a solution that enhanced accessibility, improved infrastructure, and created a pedestrian-oriented downtown environment.
