Compass Rose Condominiums hired DGL to redesign the deteriorating marina walls and improve shoreline protection. DGL completed boundary and topographic surveys, structural design, permitting through ODNR and the US Army Corps of Engineers, and construction observation. Existing conditions included a failing concrete wall with an undersized stream opening that caused water backup, soil loss, and wall movement, as well as deteriorated rock groins that provided insufficient wave protection from Lake Erie.
DGL designed a Redi-Rock gravity retaining wall system constructed in front of the existing wall to minimize risk to adjacent condominium structures, while the eastern wall was replaced to maintain marina width. The design also incorporated an enlarged stream opening to improve drainage and accommodate a future pedestrian bridge. In addition, the rock groin was redesigned with increased height, larger stone, and modified geometry to enhance wave protection and reduce sediment buildup.
