The Fostoria Railroad Grade Separation project was aimed at improving accessibility
within the eastern section of the City. The neighborhood is surrounded by railroad tracks
to the north, west, and south with multiple at-grade crossings which intersect with Norfolk
Southern (NS) and CSX rail lines. The goal of the project was to implement significant
roadway improvements to enhance emergency response accessibility, ensure the safety
of the traveling public, and increase mobility and quality of life for residents. DGL’s flight
mission was executed to collect high resolution aerial images of the existing roadway
prior to the design of major improvements.
The produced orthomosaic aerial was utilized as reconnaissance for survey work to be
performed in the neighborhood. To provide our survey team with a more detailed site map
for the ODOT SEN-025 project, a DGL Flight team collected high resolution aerial images
of the roadway, railroad crossing and neighboring right-of-way utilizing the Mavic-3E RTK
sUAS. Once processed, this orthomosaic georeferenced map was used to streamline
project planning and provided assurance that all required planimetrics were observed by
our team on site.
Safety Considerations and Operational Limitations
Avoidance of Flying Over Moving Vehicles: Per FAA Part 107.39 regulations, UAVs
are prohibited from flying directly over moving vehicles unless specific waivers or
conditions are met. To avoid flying directly over the public street, the mission course path
was conducted over the grassy area next to the road.
