DGL was contracted by the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority (TLCPA) to provide access improvements to the Port of Toledo General Cargo Docks and Ironville Terminal, including two modern roundabouts. The circular intersections at Front/Millard and Millard/Tiffin were designed to ensure adequate traffic movement to port terminals and other industry adjacent to Front, Tiffin, and Millard, which had previously been hindered by stop signs. The roundabouts accommodated increasing traffic from the new port operations and general cargo dock, which occasionally required 24-hour operation depending on vessel arrivals, as well as industrial traffic along Millard. The roundabouts were also designed to accommodate oversized Michigan and super loads that utilized this critical freight corridor to access the port and surrounding industrial facilities. The improvements increased safety and provided continuous traffic movement through the corridor. This enhanced mobility supported future planned development at the port and augmented economic opportunities. Overhead lane use signage in accordance with City of Toledo standards was designed and utilized for this project. The project was completed in 2020 and won an ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards award in 2021.
