A high number of rear-end crashes and significant congestion had occurred along Maple Avenue, the main corridor in the Zanesville. Several intersections within the half-mile study area were identified on the 2019 Safety Priority List, including the Maple Avenue / SR 60 and Military Road intersection (#443), Garden Road (#73), Grove Road (#114), and Orchard Hill Road (#228).
In collaboration with the City and Ohio Department of Transportation District 5, short- and medium-term countermeasures were pursued for funding. These improvements included upgraded signing and pavement markings, improved intersection sight distances, signal coordination, additional signal heads, and conversion of unsignalized intersections to right-in/right-out access. Funding for the safety improvements was awarded in October 2021.
