DGL prepared a Traffic Impact Study (TIS) for ThenDesign Architecture (TDA) on behalf of the North Royalton School District for a new elementary school located on State Route 94 (State Road) in North Royalton, Ohio. The new school combined the three existing elementary schools into one central location. DGL was contracted by the architect to review the onsite circulation and mainline roadway improvements, as well as the impacts of the new elementary school at the existing High School and Middle School for the District.
After the TIS was submitted and approved by the school district and City, DGL prepared the public improvement plans along State Road in front of the new school. Improvements included roadway widening and drainage, upgraded pavement markings, signing, and signal installation, along with the signal for the intersection of State Road and Valley Parkway, located to the north of the new school. Signal installation at the State Road and Valley Parkway intersection included detection, incident cameras, and fiber optic connectivity to the North Royalton City Hall. Valley Parkway, a Cleveland Metroparks road, experiences significant non-vehicular traffic, including pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians, due to the adjacent multi-use path. The existing equestrian trail crossing just south of Valley Parkway was incorporated into the signalized intersection. In order for the equestrians to cross State Road without dismounting their horse, two sets of pedestrian push buttons were mounted on one pedestal. The lower push button was installed at a traditional height for pedestrian use, while the second set was mounted high enough so that someone riding a horse would be able to activate the signal.
