DGL provided the design for the mini roundabout and connector drive at the main entrance of the Penta Career Center campus. The purpose of the project was to enhance traffic circulation and efficiency during peak hours of the school day. This project was constructed to align with the Buck and Lime City Road improvements adjacent to campus constructed in 2019. Demolition of the existing intersection, minor drainage improvements, pavement markings and signage were also included with the project.
In separate contracts from the roundabout with Penta Career Center, DGL also developed the construction documents for the perimeter security fencing improvements, provided a campus-wide pavement evaluation, provided construction documents for a student training house, as well as provided the school with a campus master utility drawing.
The perimeter security improvement plans included the layout and details for 1,900 feet of security fencing, 270 feet of galvanized chain-link fencing, vehicular sliding gates, swing gates, pedestrian gates, and several decorative brick piers. DGL worked very closely with Penta’s security contractor during design to ensure the school’s security needs were met when incorporating the new fencing, gates, and access points.
The campus-wide pavement evaluation report was used to assess the current conditions of the asphalt lots and roadways throughout campus. The goal was to obtain an unbiased ranking of the current pavement so future rehabilitations and/or preventative maintenance could be addressed in a systematic and cost-effective approach.
The training house is a two-story, wood-framed residential-style facility on a poured-in-place concrete foundation with a crawl space and mud slab. Unoccupied and approximately 2,000 square feet, the building has no plumbing, limited heating, and minimal electrical service, and includes a mock kitchen, bathroom, laundry area, attic access, dormer, and attached garage. Much of the building was self-performed by the faculty and students. The facility will be used to train future students in carpentry, dry wall construction, as well as fire rescue procedures.
A master utility drawing for the campus was also completed. The school needed a drawing showing all existing underground site utilities on their campus. DGL performed the necessary field work and record drawing research to create the drawing, which included each utility color-coded and depicted for quick reference purposes.
