DGL was hired by a residential client in Maumee, Ohio, who had several timber retaining walls in their backyard. These wood timbers were rotting, failing, and allowing the slope towards the Maumee River to move. Additionally, the timbers were moss covered and the wood stairs were becoming unsafe. The client had a desire to build a series of Redi-Rock retaining walls to stabilize the hillside leading down to the Maumee River and provide access to the river from the home above via stairs and a ramp. DGL was responsible for designing a series of 12 walls on the site.
A wall with an overlook area was built near the river just outside of the normal flood elevation of the river. A boat ramp and floating dock are planned for future construction from the overlook area as a subsequent phase of the improvements. A second set of walls with stairs were built within the hillside between the lower and middle levels. Additional walls were added to connect the home level to the middle level. These walls were composed as a series of terraced structures, creating a transition from the house to the middle level with integrated ramps and stairs. The upper section had additional walls to wrap the garage, the stairs from the wood deck above, and stairs from the street level to the patio/upper level.
DGL’s scope of services included surveying to collect existing site information for design, conceptual site design for the layout of the retaining walls, and structural design of the retaining walls using a Redi-Rock modular block wall. DGL additionally performed the construction staking layout during construction.
