DGL conducted annual inspections of the two Silica Drive bridges over Ten Mile Creek in the City of Sylvania. Over time, inspections revealed substantial deterioration in both the vehicular and pedestrian structures, leading to the determination that full replacement was necessary. DGL assisted the City in acquiring ODOT funding for replacement of the structures to ensure safety for traffic in the project area.
Following funding approval, the City contracted with DGL to complete additional surveying and right-of-way services, design of the new combined bridge and roadway approaches, coordination with private utility companies, and creation of the final construction plan documents. The final plans included lighting and signing for the new structure. DGL’s team assisted with maintenance of traffic plans throughout construction and performed additional inspections of the pedestrian bridge to ensure students could continue to cross safely prior to replacement. The pedestrian bridge was ultimately removed without incident.
The new bridge was designed with a sidewalk incorporated into the same structure as well as an overlook area. Since this bridge is used by many students at Sylvania Northview High School, a barrier separating the walking surface from the driving surface was incorporated into the design, effectively shielding students from vehicular traffic.
Total construction cost for the bridge was approximately $1,290,000 and the bridge was completed on schedule at the end of summer 2023.
