DGL was selected for the St. Joseph (St. Joe’s) Catholic School reconstruction of their existing 33,000-square-foot parking lot. The lot had developed major cracking as well as several other areas showing significant signs of sub-base failure. The parking lot also experienced water seeping from the pavement cracks even during dry times, which continued to reduce the health of the pavement. The multipurpose lot is designated for both parking and outside school activities, such as basketball. The combination of vehicular and student traffic raised safety concerns.
To meet onsite stormwater detention and quality requirements, the project incorporated two key measures: the site was re-graded to ensure runoff remained onsite rather than flowing directly into the City’s storm sewer system, and underground stormwater chambers were installed to provide the required detention. Traditional above-ground detention was not feasible due to limited space and the need to preserve existing parking and playground areas.
The parking lot sits approximately four feet below the sidewalk that serves the school as well as the church. To make the transition safer and accessible, DGL also provided the structural design and detailing for two new switch back ADA ramps.
