The Wood County Engineer initiated the project located near Owens Community College, Penta County Vocational High School, and the Ampoint Industrial Park. Long traffic backups and safety concerns were the highlight of the initial study. The project had been designated a Tier II project on Governor Taft’s Railroad Grade Separation Program allowing DGL to conduct a feasibility study. The offset realignment of Oregon Road allowed existing Oregon Road to operate at full capacity during most of the construction period.
The bridge was a three-span precast concrete I-beam superstructure on hammerhead piers and stub abutments. An MSE wall was designed to be placed in front of the south abutment to protect a private sanitary line owned by Ampoint Industrial Park. The north abutment utilized a conventional spill-through type design. In addition to roadway and bridge design activities, DGL completed all right-of-way plan development to support the project’s construction.
