The Chessie Circle Trail is an 11-mile corridor that has been known as “the backside” of the Toledo Terminal Railroad and the Westside Corridor. The corridor connects The University of Toledo, the University Parks Trail, Wildwood Preserve Metropark, the Ottawa Park Trails, several City of Toledo parks and schools and the W.W. Knight Nature Preserve in Wood County. DGL was enlisted to design a 1.5-mile portion of the 16-foot-wide bike path along the former CSX ROW. This trail section includes five at-grade roadway crossings as well as a single span pedestrian bridge that crosses over the Anthony Wayne Trail. The trail was designed to minimize environmental impact, and no permanent ROW was required. The project also included horizontal and vertical alignments, super elevations, and drainage elements.
As part of the plans, a park was constructed nearby that displayed salvaged historical bridge parts, display boards and benches. In addition, the stone parking area located at the Secondary Node to Chessie Circle Trail near River Road was improved with an asphalt surface course and dropped curb
After completion of the trail plans, DGL was contracted to perform design on three subsequent projects as part of Chessie Circle.
The Copland Lot and Restroom consisted of a prefabricated restroom building, 10-vehicle parking lot, and sanitary/water services.
The Chessie Circle Drainage Improvements improved the drainage by grading the ditch to re-establish grade and provide positive flow from Detroit Avenue to Glanzman Drive.
DGL prepared the demolition plans for the 1,400-ft CSX Railroad Bridge over the Maumee River.
